Morph Targets...

So the chair is sorted and i've been working on a rig. Because this is going to have to accomodate a highly anthropomorphic animation, as well as a less so anthropmorphic and more 'chairy' animation, there are quite a few to be made. Here is a quick render showing the process anyway, still a few more to do. Then i'll do the bottom half of the chair, as I want to be able to create a skating motion or something for the anthropomorphic animation, and some sort of movement for the more 'chairy' animation, as i dont want it to look dead from the waist down (look at me, giving chairs waists, how silly.)

After watching the animator and the seat, I felt inspired on how I could improve it given the chance. So I'm going to do it. I drew up a sketch of a basic, will be low-poly, chair. I then noted down some key words that I felt best represented the way I chair moves that I will keep in mind whilst animating. I want to do 2 short animations to be able to compare and contrast anthropomorphism and the '-ness' of an object. To keep it simple, the animations will simply show movement, but in 2 very different ways. The first animation will be of the chair being moved in a very anthropomorphic way, humanised etc, exaggerated with the use of squash and stretch. The second will be of the chair being animated in a way that it isn't so much humanised, but being manipulated in a way that really captures the essence of a chairs movements. Here is a sketch and some notes anyway.

I quite like this, so i thought i'd just pop it in a post... I think perhaps it morphs a little too much, i dont like when it tip toes rather than utilising its wheels, perhaps it could have moved in a little more 'foot in a rollerskate' sort of way? a little more chairy perhaps. But its nice anyway...

Just thought i'd share this example of anthropomorphism that is just wrong, on so many levels...

This is just shit, in my opinion. Its dogs, acting like people, but as dogs? Its not right. It isnt visually appealing, it doesnt look good. So whats the relevance? It proves the point that there is clearly a fine line between how much anthropmorphism should be applied to a character to make it appealing, and how much of the objects/animals original self should be retained and emphasised. If these characters were to talk, they would bark, because they are too dog like, not enough character is brought out. Its just a generic dog, doing bad tricks in my opinion. Animation should be about emphasis, elaboration and pushing the boundaries on real life, which this doesnt do.

Pigeon-ness...

So i was watching Bolt earlier for the first time, and i just HAD to post about the pigeons. They are so so so PIGEON-Y! I think this highlights what I was saying earlier about 'chairness', really encompassing the essence of what the object (animal in this case) is and playing it up. If they had made these pigeons just waddle in and stand still and talk like any old bird i dont think this would have been anywhere near as effective. I love the head-peck as they walk, the stupidity, the twitchy nature, the weird googly eyes and the closed beak peck to explore an object. Brilliant. A great example of exaggeration and emphasis used at its best.

At the end of each day we had a focus group, where we could discuss opinions and thoughts from the days events. I scrawled down a few notes such as the following:

- "chairness" vs. the representation of a chair. << capturing the essence of a chair, how it would move if it could, its intentions as a chair etc rather than just the silhouette of a chair, moving as a human etc.. (this idea can clearly be implied to any object, chair being the example in this case.)

- our own personal memories, and how this can alter our perception of an object. << e.g, i could look at a mug character, and feel really positive about that mug because it reminds me of my favourite mug back home etc, where someone else could look at the same mug character, and feel negatively towards it, as it is like the manky one their nan gives them with a naff brew in it when they go to visit etc. You see what i am getting at? this could either benefit or hinder audience emotional reaction.

- object carrying its own meaning << this example is from Elizsa but i like it... A red poppy in this country is a highly symbolic object, which represents the lives lost in WW1, which we wear every novemeber to remember all lives lost in wars, but the same red poppy in venezula (for example) would mean nothing...

- connotations to past memories
- objects demanding anecdote
- an object being a portal to imprint human emotions onto
- object vs. subject

- some languages pre-assign gender to objects << e.g 'le' and 'la' in french, where its plainly 'the' in english, no gender assignment to objects. I thought this was one of the most important and interesting points made during the whole seminar.

- how context affects audiences perception of an object << a funny anecdote was made during the discussion, where a student and her friends visited the Tate, and there was a bucket in the middle of the floor with water dripping into it from a leaky roof. They thought it was fascinating and part of the exhibition. This instantly reminded me of my naff shopping centre back home which always has buckets dotted around the place catching water from a leaky roof, which i found less fascinating and more annoying.

Object Theatre Seminar...

Just thought i'd do a post to note down a few points that were raised during the object theatre seminar the other week. First of all, I thoroughly enjoyed the 3 days with everyone. It was so interesting talking to such a vast range of people from a variety of different backgrounds. We had a different practitioner leading a seminar on each of the three days, each bringing a completely different approach. The first day, we took the approach of channeling object for what it was, rather that trying to anthropomorphise it, or projecting thoughts and feelings onto it. I found this really interesting, as it made me think about what Andy had said about really trying to bring out the "chairness" of a chair, meaning, dont try to make it human, or make it move or behave like a human would etc, let it move how it would, the way it would, why it would want to do this etc.
The second day was more of what i had considered object theatre, where we placed narrative, thoughts, feelings, emotions and intention onto objects, to transform them into more conventional characters. I had fun with this one as it really allowed me improvise with ideas and further highlight the importance of timing and pacing, especially in a live situation.
The final day i found really interesting. The use of random found objects, used to imply a completely different object. I found these performances absolutely incredible to watch, as it was completely different to anything I had seen before. I never thought a carrier bag could be used to represent the sea, a character, blood, clouds, hats, etc etc etc... all in one scene.
Each of the three days provided a completely different insight into what object theatre could be. I learnt to really push the boundaries of performance, to have confidence in the audience to be able to understand what is happening in a scene without having to spell it out for them, just because you are dealiing with objects rather than people, rigs or actors. In a strange way i learnt not to be so bloody self conscious too, if i make an arse out of myself who cares, because while i feel i look like an absolute tool, someone else might find it inspiring, or interesting or also a load of shit, but i dont really care :)

Maxo Rig Experiment...

So i thought i'd experiment with the Maxo rig today. I wanted to focus on timing and performance. I think the last section where the lamp breaks again needs to be slowed down just a touch, but im pleased with how its looking at this stage in comparison to other work in the past! I made a real conscious effort with myself this time not to rush this, before I would have tried to cram this into perhaps 200 frames, but this spread to 350 frames, and i think it is a very important lesson to learn. I think due to the long pauses, it really allows the character time to think and show thought process. Also, I remembered something that John Lasseter said at a Siggraph seminar back in the 90's, that NOTHING in 3D animation is every 100% still or motionless, there is always some continuation of movement, or else the action dies. So i also made the effort to ensure that the character on the left is never completely still. Obviously the one on the right is, as he is broken, so i think this is a good experiment in proving that idea correct. Here it is anyway, sorry its on YouTube and not Vimeo, but the queue on Vimeo right now is ridiculous! I'm thinking Vimeo Plus could be a sound investment for the future...

I've downloaded the 'Maxo' rig from creative crash this week and have been playing around with it. Its a really nice, simple easy rig to use, and pretty much is a copy of Luxo Jr. So hopefully by monday i'll have a mini artefact to show, something that shows good timing and pacing in the piece, as this is what I will structure my new learning agreement around, and performance in general. It will be a very simple story line, something that really showcases the animation. I'm thinking along the lines of 'Lamp Love', and not in a crude way...

Last week we had an object puppetry seminar with Sean. I found this really interesting as we really got to explore the objects inertia. I learnt through this task the importance of timing in the performance. I think this is an aspect I need to research more deeply as it seems to be an important determining factor that connects both areas. As my subject area is a continuation from my final year of study, I feel I have already researched quite in depth on the animation front, so I would like to look into greater detail on the puppetry side. I am attending a 4 day seminar in object theatre in December so I'm looking forward to learning more and more about this area with people from a whole range of backgrounds that will ultimately aid my understanding and the quality of my animation.

So earlier in the week Sean sent me an article about anthropomorphism, however it was all in French. Luckily, my dad lives and works in Paris so he is fluent, and managed to translate the article for me, yay. Here is what it had to say, however my dad warned me it may be a bit literal in places as he wasn't entirely sure of the point being made, but it makes good enough sense to me...

Anthropomorphic Attraction.

It has been proved that the human eye is, through its composition, attracted by moving things. It is a distant inheritance of our reflexes, a survival weapon. The movement is attractive, even before creating the beginnings of an emotion or thought. The contemporary publicity environment is simply the putting into practice of this instinct.
"Environment, environment.......I'd rather say media hype".

That which occurs immediately after the pure perception touches the emotional register. We will speak again later about what is going on in the head of the viewer.

Equally, it goes without saying that the condition necessary at the perception of this movement is light. We will also deal with the role of light in the part dedicated to the viewer. Generally, all means of perception are simultaneously active, and for the viewer sight and sound are preferred.

Therefore, by examining this reflex, registered deeply in the behaviour of our colleagues, we learn that facial morphology, and specifically the appearance of a pair of eyes, is more important than all other forms. In principle, they carry the attention. Those two eyes, whether conspicously visible or just suggested in the shadow they occupy between the nose profile and the arch of the eyebrows, focus the attention.

Few things,even Puppetry objects, escape from this rule.....even the most rustic or the most primitive. "

From this article, it affirms my previous research that eyes, or more the suggestion of eyes is an intrical part when showing an object has life through movement. So perhaps the direction that my research should now take is how varying levels of suggestion help or hinder the performance of a character. I'm off to do some drawing now, I'll post again later!

But its what I need to do I think. But more sophisticated in terms of its face. From discussion last week it became clear that faces and eyes etc aren't necessary to create life and show movement, which I discoved last year during my artefacts, but this year, I want to specificically focus on performance, including lip syncing etc, so think back to my plug animation... I want to create something like that again, with a variety of objects, with effective faces, suitable for performance and lip sync. So this week I think I'm going to have to crack the pencils out to really discover what works and what doesnt in terms of facial poses etc. Hopefully it works out in the end...

I'm still unsure of what direction I'm supposed to be taking in terms of work to hand in by Christmas, so in the mean time I'm just attempting to learn Maya as thoroughly as I can in this time so that I know what I'm doing for the production stage after Christmas. Anyone actually know, exactly what is expected from us by then? It would be helpful!

Just thought I'd do a quick post about some freelance work I've been doing. I was approached last week by BestBits media ltd, a London company that deals in few areas of multimedia, you might recognise some of their work if you check out their site. So I've completed a 3d image they needed doing which has scope for future projects too. So I'm pleased that I can continue working with some companies to and gain valuable experience whilst doing my masters. Good week.

I could literally watch these all day... I think this veg lady should meet my cola bottle, I think they would get on well. I love how the timing is absolutely spot on. I think im going to have to look into timing more specifically in the digital world, as its very easy for thinks to look regimented and false when trying to animate a certain motion.

I really like this video too. It shows the combination of 2 inanimate objects to create one object overall. I think it shows how in the digital world, we can make any object squash or stretch regardless of its physical properties, but when faced in the real world with solid objects such as tea cups, in order to create a sucessful performance, it has been combined with a cloth to create real dynamism required for such a physical performance to be sucessful. This video also highlights what Sean was talking about, the connection between the puppeteers and how they all work together to create a well time, fluent well paced piece. Here it is anyway...

I thought i'd look into some object theatre examples and I came across this piece. I thought it was really interesting how the puppeteer manipulates the necklaces form so subtly, lightly and delicately to show movement. What was also interesting here is the importance of eyes, and eye movement, like in animation. Foley is also heavily relied upon in this piece to tell the story.

Ok, she goes a little bit mental at the end, but you get the point!

MA Puppetry and Digital Animation

Just a quick post to say that i have now started my Masters degree in puppetry and digital animation. I'm really excited to get started with everything now. I thought it would be nice to continue using the same blog to keep everything in one place. I'm going to be continuing my research into anthropomorphic objects, as i learnt so much about it during my BA, and feel there is still so much to discover. I am now going to focus more into the facial movements of anthropomorphic objects, and consequently their acting performance. So more Ed Hooks and Richard Williams for me i think!

(on a rather unrelated note, i had an idea for an animation. Recently ive just completed La Noire, and i loved the way 1940's Hollywood was represented. Whilst played i noticed all the men wore hats, all the time, hats. I then wondered, whats happened to all the hats? Thousands of hats just disappeared off the face of the earth seemingly, i thought it could be a cool animation idea... i know, im weird, my mind works in strange ways ...)

Just thought i'd give you a quick update about whats happened since the end of final year! Basically, I got a First Class Honours degree in Multimedia, which I am so proud of. It just goes to show you can start a degree you knew nothing about,push yourself so hard to learn and do the best you can, and end up reaping the rewards :) I have decided to stay on one more year at Trent to do the Puppetry and Digital Animation Masters degree. Thats going to be a really great experience which i'm excited for. Also, I have been comissioned by the college I did the 3D work on for my client project to complete the revised changes, and making a tidy sum in the process, yay for freelance! Its really cool to look back through this blog and see where I came from 3 years ago to where I am now. It's gone so so quickly its rather hard to believe! Ah well, claw my way back for one more year then hopefully write another post in a years time saying ive got a job in some hotshot company! We can all dream haha ...

Just a quick post to say ive been chosen for the New Designers Exhibition 2011 in London in summer. I'm genuinely shocked but so elated. Its so nice to be recognised for the hard work and determination that i've put in over the last 3 years, if you look where I started in the first year which was literally square one. I didnt know a thing about 3D or animation. So its an incredible feeling knowing that ive come on such a long journey from start to finish. Pleased is a total understatement.

So i had my meeting on Monday presenting my final piece to the client. I went prepared with 2 versions on disc, one on my pendrive and an online version if all else failed. Low and behold there were software compatability issues, sods law, but i had the HD online version i could show. I've since changed the format and sent them another disc with it on. But anyway, i braced myself infront of these fully suited architects, expecting the worst, but they were thrilled with it. I was so relived. They noted that it was how they were expecting it to look in their minds and felt familiar with the scene, nothing felt alien about the piece, which means i've managed to reproduce the site accurately and sucessfully. They were keen to show it to their client which is Abingdon and Witney College. They said that there are some slight changes in the plans (e.g there is no revolving door on N block now and A block is slightly smaller) but if they wanted any of these changes implementing, they would put the college in direct contact with me, and i would be able to charge for any additional changes. They seemed keen to keep in contact for any future projects also which is exciting. I'm just working on my evaluation now that i would like to be finished by the end of the weekend, but we shall see, its about 1800 words in at the moment. Both myself and the client coudlnt be more pleased with the result.

So here it is, after a lot of time and effort and rendering (on a laptop on the passenger seat of my car driving up the m1 at one point...) its finally done, and i couldn't be happier with the result. I had it all rendered by the end of last weekend, however in postproduction i noticed a few imperfections (max's fault not mine) and i couldnt hand it in knowing they were there. So i re-rendered a few sections where the faults were, and im really pleased that i did it, it shows the care and attention i have put in from the start of the project, so i owed it to myself to fix the issues really. I am really happy with it, i think its a nice clean piece that gives a good overview of the site, in the style the client wanted. Its so exciting to know that this is actually going to exist in the near future, so if i could i'd love to be able to visit the site when its complete and take some photos to add into my portfolio. I'd like to thank Robothams Architecture for the opportunity to work on the project. I'm presenting the final piece to them on Monday morning, so i'll update their thoughts on the project then, in the meantime, enjoy!

client project camera route

I've been given an idea of the general camera route and i've been looking for good examples to base mine on. I want something that is a steady pace, so the audience can take in as much of the site as they want as a leisurely pace. I also want nice clean transitions from one shot to another. My client has said that how it looks it up to me, as long as the order of the animation is followed really. The way they have structured the walk through is a logical approach and one i would have taken myself. Today im going to set up some cameras in the scene and hope that they look smart, clean and well paced. I found this example on youtube that i really like editing wise, just nice fades to the next shot... watch about 1 min onwards ...

Here is my fourth artefact. The intentions here were to create an anthropomorphic character that moves firstly in a logical manner, considering its physical limitations due to material and structure etc, and secondly in an illogical manner, so using squash and stretch and deforming the objects structure, and seeing which, if any, is more effective, or not :) I'll present this at my tutorial for feedback tomrrow.

Just a quick update on the client project. I am now at the rendering stage, woo! Here is the first pan down the site. I rendered these shots out once but forgot the z depth pass and noticed a few minor issues i wanted to change, so i cut my losses with the first set of renders and re-rendered these with z depth, which looks SO much nicer. Going to send to client now and see if they are happy with it. Here it is anyway ...

Please change the quality to 720 for HD !

Lighting is now complete. Blocks G and A are now in the scene, just a few tweaks left to do for block N, then that will also be in the scene. Render times are currently good. Meeting with the client soon to discuss camera route then render! Im really pleased with how its looking. Here are renders anyway...

Mental Ray Proxy

Quick update. I'm just working on the whole site plan at the moments. I've been looking into 3ds max trees and how to use a mental ray proxy to duplicate them around the scene whilst keeping file size down. The client specified the importance in the initial meeting of the tree lined walkway to the main building, so i'm currently working on this now. I've used fractal noise maps to give the trees texture and look better. Firstly, i customised the materials on 3 different trees (so that its not 1 identical tree across the whole scene). I then created a proxy for each of these...
Here is a quick render and some screenshots so you can see what the proxy looks like in the scene and how it renders out.

P.s ignore the green ground they will be grass displacements eventually!

Faking it ...

Just a quick update to let you know where I am currently on the client project. I am now working on the lighting and I have cracked it. Realised that faking the lighing is going to be the simplest but best option, so i have used a combination of mental ray area omni's and mental ray sky portals. Earlier in the week I contacted my client about what types of light fittings they plan on using, and they replied with blue prints for each block and a key showing me what each fitting looks like, (very very useful). So i've modelled the fittings and used mr area omnis for the recessed spot lights and used mr sky portals for the suspended strip lighting. These give the illusion of being lit where actually, i have mr area omnis again above the ceiling creating a general light, lighting larger spaces where dark shadows were very common. This has worked out well, elimiating dark and unwanted shadows and brightening the scene nicely. Below is the blueprints in comparison to the 3ds max wireframe, and a render showing the scene so far (yes it is a little overexposed right now, but thats just a case of reducing intensity, so that can and will be fixed). Enjoy!

Just a quick update on the lighting for the client project. My client is happy with for the project is going and is pleased. Today i've received the blueprints for each block, showing wear each of the lights will go, and the types of fittings that will be used. So thats the next job now really. Its really useful having the blueprints to hand as now im not wasting time making light fittings that arent correct which the client wouldn't be happy with. If you don't ask you don't get! I would post the blue prints up on here but i dont know if they are confidential documents and don't want to get in trouble, but I will add copies to my hand in so they can see what i've been working from.

So i've finished re-modelling the interior objects for A block which im currently working on. I've also been re-texturing so that now its using Arch and Design as opposed to standard textures. Problems encountered have included face normals flipping on their own when an A+D texture has been applied. I tried using a double sided texture first to try and solve this but then just flipped the normals back manually. Still yet to light the scene so im running off default, but this will change! you can see the different in the skp file to the max file. Here are a few renders...

Yes they will look similar as im following plans and can't change the design. OOH and also, i have managed to get the initial file down from 44mb to 6mb :) which im pleased about. Plenty of room for some nice lighting now :)

Client Project Update...

Just realised I haven't done a client project post! So i've basically got an architectural visualisation walk through project of a college site. The focus will be on 3 main blocks, which are A, G and N. Blocks A and N require interior spaces created, but G doesnt need an interior pan as its just a teaching block with classrooms. As this is a project from an Architects, the buildings are accurate and do or will evntually exist, so from a design point of view, they are set in stone. My task is to create a representation of the site when it is done to show to students/staff etc. So, because the design of the site is out of my control, what is my actual project? ... well... I will be modelling objects for the interior spaces and making those look really nice, choosing the furnishings and light fittings etc, ensuring they work well in the scene. Texturing the entire site and everything in it, (which is pretty bloody big), lighting the whole site (again, very bloody big), creating a sensible camera route with the client so they are happy and eventually rendering it all. Which is going to be a task and a half. So even though their walls are already there, there is still so much to do. My creativity will come through in the choice of camera angles and lenses etc and the final look of the project. The client did specify that it doesnt need to be 'photorealistic' as its is only a representation, plans are likely to change somewhat etc, so a good representation will suffice. I have been feeling rather overwhelmed with it all there is a LOT to do on it, and sometimes i feel like i just dont know where to start with it all. I think i feel disconnected somewhat because its obviously not my design, i'm not an architect and don't build things! So i have it in my head that it needs to look different to what they have already, but it never will be that much different, because at the end of the day its real life bricks and mortar i'm recreating, and that cant be changed. I think when it comes to all the texturing, lighting etc and i've finished modelling all the interior objects that ill begin to feel its more like my project. I think its due to the fact that i've never jumped into a project so far into its development, everything i've always done has been me on my own from initial paper sketches to final polished animation and everything inbetween. But i guess this is the point of a client project, and the realisation that in the real world you work as part of the team, and focus on your specific role in that project. I guess its strange accepting that I dont have full control over a project. I think understanding that learning process will just help to prepare me for real projects after graduation, and an understanding that I will work on what is set for me to do. So even though its a very different experience to any other project i've done before, I think it is more realistic in the long run. Here is the final animation for my second artefact. I intended to show personality in anthropomorphism in this animation, although life and emotion are still apparent, as all 3 aspects always work in conjunction with one another. In this story, I have the flour bag that is like a miserable overseer of the egg people. The heroic milk bottle shmoozes in and saves the eggs from their inevitable demise. All animated solely using morph targets. Also includes all feedback received from my last seminar. Take a look anyway.

Here is the first part of my 2nd artefact. I took it along to my seminar for critique. Feedback was positive about the way it is looking and generated some interesting conversation. He is looking weighted and clear eye momvement it indicated, which i specificallly wanted to work on this time. It was suggested however to add a few more morph targets, such as a breathe in and out and perhaps some shoulders. I will add these in and they will be included in the rest of the animation. Other suggestions included being more generous with time, and allow the character time to show each action. Take a look anyway, finished article to come shortly!

Next Anthropomorphic Character...

For my second artefact, im going to be focussing on personality in anthropomorphic character. From the feedback of my first artefact, it was apparent that movement indicating eye movement was required, as this helps the character act as if they are going through a thought process. This next character will be used as part of my next artefact, along side the milk bottle character. I picture him as a miserable character, with a furrowed brow etc, which will be a good challenge considering he is a bag of flour. This is a little test of the morph targets anyway so you can see the ways in which it can move. The image shows the line up of the multiple morph targets. I'm really enjoying animating with morph targets and I see how well this technique lends itself to anthropomorphic animation. There is no need to use bones etc for a realistic look, as it isnt! Why try and make it look realistic when thats not the intention. Using morph targets allows for really odd movements with absolutely no restriction, which in the world of fantasy is essential. Anyway, take a look!

Artefact One

Sorry for the long delay in updating, but i've really had very little to share as its been essay essay essay time for the past few months, but worth it as its due a first apparently. So im glad about that. Had a total shit week last week, my first artefact was all wrong, my computer broke and had to be totally formatted, the shop I worked at closed down so I lost my job too, so did break down a little bit when it all came too much. Not the best, but as per i've bounced back, and with it got a much improved artefact. For my essay, I was looking at the ways life, emotion and personality are depicted in inanimate objects, or anthropomorphic inanimate objects if you want the big words. For my first artefact, I focussed primarily on life. Through my research in my essay, I discovered this was mainly emitted via movement, so i've created a series of walk cycles that could depict the way a milk bottle would walk if it could. Here it is anyway.

Also working on the client project, a 3D walkthrough of a £7million college refurbishment. Currently working the the DWG files provided by the client, but as soon as some 3d renders are available I will be posting. Update soon.

Artefact 1 - Personality

Artefact 3 – Emotion
During this artefact, I will create a selection of short animations of an anthropomorphic character depicting the six basic human emotions as outlined by Ed Hooks. The principles regarding body language outlined in the written document will be utilised here to prove what was stated. Some anthropomorphic characters will have arms legs and facial features where others will not, to record whether this affects the audience’s perception of emotion

Artefact 4 – Exploring the importance of combining the previous three elements.
This artefact will be a combination of the previous three artefacts. This will endeavour to support the argument outlined in the written document that all three must coincide with one another in order to work successfully. This artefact again will utilise anthropomorphic characters with and without arms legs and facial features to see what affect this has on audience perception of the three elements.

Artefact 5 – Final animation shown to KS1 primary school children.
The final animation of anthropomorphic characters made from inanimate objects will be shown to a reception class of about 12 pupils. This is to gauge their reactions and perceptions of life, emotion and personality conveyed from anthropomorphic characters. This is a useful experiment as the majority of anthropomorphic characters feature in children’s animation. This artefact again will utilise anthropomorphic characters with and without arms legs and facial features to see what affect this has on children’s perception of the three elements. They will be asked a selection of simple questions such as “what do you think the character is feeling?” and “what makes you think this?” without naming any emotions , so the children can give their first opinion without any other influence. Their responses will be recorded and analysed.

Artefact 6 – Final animation amended using analysis of Artefact 5.
The responses from the fifth artefact will help to gauge any changes that are required to aid the animation further. If there are sections that do not read properly or are misunderstood, this will be amended from the feedback gained. This should hopefully allow for a flawless animation perfectly conveying the chosen emotions, personalities and life.

These act as an initial outline are are liable to change during the term.

So i have finished my mini client project. Basically i went and took pictures of this empty shop unit, and create a 3D piece of how it will eventually look. The client wanted it to be bright and excentric and rather kitsch, based primarily around the handbag and shoe brand irregular choice. Hi all. Hope you're all having a fab summer so far. Its beein reallly nice being able to relax with work recently, however i'm currently undertaking a client project for a local independant company called Bias, who sell absolutely stunning handbags, purses, scarves etc. Gorgeous shop. They are currently in the process of acquiring a new shop, however the site is an empty shell and in need of a good redesign at the moment, which is where i stepped in. I am modelling the shop and have control over the new layout/design of the site which is centred around the brand Irregular Choice. Its a really really exciting project and i'm enjoying working on it. It's going to look great on the website and as part of my portfolio. Will up load the images and what i've made so far soon. Its great practice for our third year client projects too, so because i'm already doing one in my own time, its going to make life easier for october!

P.S. I got a first for second year WAHOO lol. Have it hahah.

CHARACTER ANIMATION IS DONE!!! all i need to do is record some foley and then add it in. sooooo pleased with how its looking. i've managed to create exactly what was in my mind. i have managed to model, rig and animate not 1, but 4 yes 4!!! characters for this project. so pleased with it. though you'll have to wait about 5 weeks til i put it on here, as i want the first viewing to be infront of everyone at the hand in seminar with andy where we all show each other our work. until then!

helloooo! jsut a really quick update to show there is life on this blog! I've been so so so so so so so busy animating and im happy to say its nearly done! have animated about 2500 frames so far. just going back over each section now and doing final tweaks and finalising everything. so excited about seeing it all rendered out. think its gonna look quite cool in the end :) airport is comin together too. just filling up the space now by putting in signage, bins, seating, plants etc. then just gotta spend a few days texturing, and then light it all and get that rendering.

keep an eye out as in about 5 weeks time all projects will be online for your viewing pleasure!

Haven't updated for a while! But i have been very very busy. Half my character animation is done now and my airport is really coming along. Board game, not so much, just a few things to iron out if i eventually put some hours in on it which i plan to do this weekend. Currently living on 3ds max though so i've kind of abandoned it. OK so there isn't any progress shots to this point but i literally sat at max for about 3/4 hours solid to get to this point. Here is the little girl character for my tea party scene. Inspiration taken from "Boo" from Monsters Inc as she is just SO adorable, innocent and cute, and this is what i wanted to convey in my model. Here are a few renders so far. Also, the book Andy Love showed us a few weeks ago in seminar called 'Creating Characters with Personality' by Tom Bancroft is particularly useful when i was drawing my initial sketch for this model. As it has a section on children of various ages, and I found the section on toddlers very interesting as it depicts the small chubby features they have and their little pot bellies. Seriously, this film is the best film i have ever seen in a very long time. Possibly ever. Everything about it is just absolutely beautiful. The na'vi peoplea are just beautiful characters, the Pandora environment is just stunning, and its just completely mind blowing. The best 2 and a half hours of 3D cinema experience i've ever had. imax 3D really benefitted the narrative and it felt like you were right in the film, really involved. Its also the most expensive film ever made. James Cameron started making Avatar in 1995 but then did Titanic, as he wanted to wait until CG was as good as it is now so he could make it just how he wanted to, I heard in an interview with him on Radio 1.
Honestly, the best film i have EVER seen. Complete perfection from start to finish. I would watch this 100 times over and over.
Totally in love with this film.

And i have finally finished tweaking every indiviual piece of track joints between the 2 poles. Totally knackard, but its worth it. Will upload some renders on Monday when im back in Nottingham as i come back to my home in Rugby every weekend to work my part time job, so do as much as i can in a big chunk. Feel a real sense of accomlishment right now, and i know its going to look really nice down to the last detail because of the amount of time ive taken over it.

Quite happy that i figure out a bug fix for the rollercoaster this afternoon. I was struggling with INCREDIBLY large file sizes for my rollercoaster track pieces and Anthony's wasnt rendering as it was moaning about not enough memory. So i have sat down and figured out a way of creating a GREAT looking track but with 5% the original file size! Woop Woop check me out. ;) back to 3ds max anyway... Oh and I checked out 2012 last night, AMAZING effects, go see. Good film. Just REALLY long. And as a good reference for robot animation check out the film 'Robots', really good and really funny too.

He looks too heavy, pretty much immobilised by his huge body section and its pissing me off not getting it to look as smooth as what were creating in seminar. His joints look dogshit and so im AGAIN in the process of re-modelling. REALLY fucking annoying as i feel like im just going over the same stuff over and over and not really making ANY process on this animation what so ever. ARGH.

After Andy Love's seminar on monday, I decided to have a play with the morpher modifier to create expression in the mouth and eyebrows. Here are 2 renders, Geoff (my robot character) looking angry, and looking confused. I chose to depict these 2 emotions as they will both feature in my animation.

Space rollercoaster...

The concept for my rollercoaster is to make a scene in space, but with a twist. I have decided to make my planets from cakes and other yummy delights, which I will navigate by track through to make it visually appealing. Here are the renders of the planets so far. However after a discussion with Simon Wallett, I questioned the keyword 'realism' from the brief, and he suggested thinking about how giant inflatable cakes would look if they were put into space. So this prompted the idea of them looking like stitched balloons with seams and tethered down to stop them floating away. I think this is a nice idea and something I will look into further. Here is what they look like so far anyway...

I've just got back from the cinema and I had to review this film as soon as i got in. In my opinion, this is the best feature film that pixar have ever released. On a par or better than Finding Nemo and Ratatouille, and I rate them very highly. Andy Love mentioned in seminar the other day that someone once said 3D should only be used to benefit the narrative. I can see what he means by this now, as I watched Final Desination in 3D when that was released a few months ago, and it was so pointless watching it in 3D, would have prefered watching it in 2D definately. But watching UP shows the whole point of 3D, actually creating the feeling of being suspended thousands of feet above ground. I actually cant think of anything negative to say about this film. The textures were the best i've ever seen, particularly on materials such as Russell's badges and Mr Fredrickson's chairs in his living room. The colours and lighting are also brilliant. This film really had everything, humour, emotion, suspense, anticipation and most importantly, you just couldnt peel your eyes from the screen for a moment, so forget toilet breaks. It was so enthralling and gripping, the narrative was so cleverly thought out. Here is a clip from UP, that had the entire theatre in stitches at "SQUIRREL."....

Watching works like this are such a huge inspiration to me, and definately keep me focussed to what i want to acheieve from the course. Like dangling a carrot infront of a donkey. Whilst watching UP, as a multimedia practitioner, I am aware of the amount of effort, time and skill that goes into creating such an epic feature film. It motivates me to do better so that i can get to where i want to be one day. To conclude, all i can say is that 'UP' is the only film i have EVER seen at the cinema where the crowd have applauded the end credits. A true masterpiece.

BOY-OING FROM SUPER MARIO GALAXY

HELLOOO!! So back to University soon, and time to start some work. I know it's been a while since my last blog but doesn't mean I haven't been working, so prepare for a massive one now haha. I was kicking back playing wii over the summer, and completed super mario galaxy from start to finish. I came across this little fella, which i thought was just the cutest little thing! ...

So I thought i'd have a go at modelling it. I only had this reference image to go on so did my best at modelling it from eye. Here are a series of Maya screenshots (as my maya renderer is completely bust and i need to reinstall, so screenshots are shocking but its the best i can do with maya at the moment)... Here are some standard progress shots:

So as you can see i sculpted from eye best i could what i thought the image would look like in 3D. Next, i exported my maya file into 3ds max and immediately faces with export issues, in the sense that max had completely misinterpreted the mouth and made it look, well, shit. So i spent a substantial amount of time reconstructing the mouth in max so that it looked decent when rendered. Here are a few renderes of the untextured complete model:

I then put this jpeg into photoshop and tweaked the image to finish the post production :) I'm really pleased with now its turned out. Not exact, but i'm pleased with how its turned out by eye... Feel free to comment.
